Skateboarding Tips for Beginners

You’re watching skateboarders and think, “That’s looks so easy, dude.” It just appears that you push-off and then balance yourself. Surfing looks pretty easy, as well. All you do is paddle-out, then stand-up when a wave rolls by. You’ll learn soon enough that skateboarding isn’t as easy as it appears. You’ll need to practice and it takes skill to do all the cool expert tricks. Read on to learn some excellent tips that will help accelerate your learning.

You can get yourself into better physical condition. There’s a lot more physically demanded than you may realize. There’s more to it than just strong legs. Skateboarding makes you use all your muscles to keep balanced and stable. And you’ll really need them for more difficult tricks. You’ll see definite improvement with your control as you get in better physical shape. A consistent work out will get you there faster.

Don’t be afraid to skate slowly. A lot of really new skaters try to do the tricks, and they really don’t quite have the skill sets for it. The end result is usually the skater getting hurt. Being able to successfully skate a few blocks doesn’t mean you’re ready for tricks. Doing a board hop takes more skill than you know. Skate steadily and go slowly, then ride for long distances. Learn to start fast and stopping the right way without any falls. If you can skate long distances, smoothly, and can avoid hitting other people on the streets, then it’s cool to start thinking about trying some tricks.

Goofy and Regular are two basic stances you’ll want to learn. For the Regular skate stance you’ll want the left foot forward, and the right foot in the back. For the Goofy – just do the opposite! For push-offs, there are four basic types. Goofy (use your left foot), and Mongo Goofy: push with your front (left) foot, Regular (use your right foot to push), Mongo Regular: push with your front (right) foot. Just keep skating and in time you’ll find which one you like best. There are variatons in the stances and strengths depending on each person. You’ll need some time and skating experience to decide what you like. You’ll be on track to pro status before you know it if you just keep in shape and practice your basics. And soon you’ll forget the time when you couldn’t stay on a board!
